Agaricus

Aethusa

Most obstinate constipation, with feeling as if all action of the bowels had been lost; intolerance of milk; pain with soreness in hypochondria. Constipation with lactose intolerance.

Alumina

This homeopathy remedy has inability to pass stool with absence of desire; nausea and faintness; rectum inactive; even a soft stool, like putty, and sticking to anus, requires great straining.

There is complete inertia of the rectum, so that the stool is expelled with great difficulty, no matter what the consistency of its is; there is little or no urging to stool; the stools may be dry, hard and knotty, like sheep dung, or soft.

Evacuation preceded by painful urging long before stool, and then straining at stool.

Constipation of children where the rectum is dry, hard, inflamed and bleeding.

Both to dryness and inactivity of the rectum producing the symptoms that soft stools are expelled with difficulty.

Anacardium

In this homeopathic medicine for constipation, there is a sensation of a plug in the rectum, it seems powerless to expel the stool; even a soft still is expelled with difficulty.

Antim crud

Diarrhea alternate with constipation; specially in old people; stool is too hard; constipation associated with much flatus and abdominal pain;

Constipation during child bed; nausea and vomiting; loss of appetite; tongue white coated.

Tongue thick white coated.

Bryonia alba

Constipation due to difficult secretion of mucus membrane there is no moisture about the parts and no mucus soften the hard stools.

Stool hard, dry as if burnt; stool are expelled with difficulty; obstinate headache with constipation. Complaints are associated with excessive thirst and white coated tongue.

When it is due to dryness of the intestinal tract and the stools are large, dry and brown, as if burnt, and are passed with a great deal of difficulty, owing to an atony of the intestines.

Patient is thirsty. Ailments from constant business worries.

Calcarea carb

Useful homeopathic medicine for constipation in children, kids and toddlers. No urge to pass stool; looking like lumps of chalk in children during the period of dentition; feeling of faintness after stool.

Crawling and constriction of stool in rectum. Stool large and hard (Bry); whitish, watery, sour.

Prolapse ani, and burning, stinging haemorrhoids. Diarrhoea of undigested, food, fetid, with ravenous appetite. Constipation; stool at first hard, then pasty, then liquid.

Causticum

Frequent ineffectual efforts to stool, with pain, anxiety and redness of face (with nose bleed, Coffea).

Rectum inactive: fills with hard faeces, which pass involuntarily and unnoticed (Aloe).

Passes little balls unnoticed. Stool tough and shiny: shines like grease.

Passes stool better while standing.

Haemorrhoids: impeding stools: swell; itch; stitch; worse walking; thinking of them; preaching or straining voice. (Comp. Nux.)

Causticum is intensely sympathetic with suffering.

A remedial of local paralysis. Urine involuntary when sneezing or coughing. Enuresis in children.

China

Constipation with vertigo; no urging; larger accumulation of faeces, especially after continued use of laxatives, with difficulty to pass them; inactivity of rectum

Collinsonia

Constipation during pregnancy; great pelvic congestion; associated with uterine disorder; congestive inertia of bowels; pressure and weight in the rectum; stool hard and sluggish; accompanied with pain; sensation as if sand in the rectum

Homeopathic medicine for constipation and piles.

Piles with constipation (even diarrhoea) bleeding, or blind and protruding; feeling of sticks (Aesculus), gravel, or sand in rectum.

Chronic, bleeding, painful haemorrhoids. Very constipated, with colic.

Graphites

Atonic dyspepsia and constipation;  dryness of mucus membrane of rectum; stool knotty, the flattened lumps covered with mucus and united with mucus threads; sensation in the rectum as if much remained after stool; rectal prolapse; soreness and tearing in the rectum after stool.

It is where the stools are covered with mucus and there is no urging. the patient sometimes goes days without a stool, and when it does come it is composed of little round balls knotted together, with shreds of mucus and accompanied with great pain when passing, owing to fissure.

Aversion to meat. Sweets nauseate. Hot drinks disagree. Nausea and vomiting after each meal.

Stomach pain is temporarily relieved by eating, hot drinks especially milk and lying down.

Fullness and hardness in abdomen, as from incarcerated flatulence; must loosen clothing; presses painfully at abdominal ring.

Inguinal region sensitive, swollen. Pain of gas opposite the side on which he lies.

Hydrastis

After the use of purgatives or laxatives when there is present the sinking, gone feeling at the epigastrium, and symptoms of gastro-duodenal catarrh, such as torpidity of the liver, yellow skin and tenderness in the hepatic region and light colored stools. Often given as mother tincture.

Ignatia

This homeopathic medicine is useful for constipation in consequences of cold, or from carriage, from riding in a carriage; great desire to pass stool; constriction in the anus after stool. Pain while passing soft stool but hard stool is painless.

Kali carb

Stool insufficient; bowels inactive; large sized feces; feels distressed an hour or two before stool.

Lac defloratum

This homeopathic medicine for constipation has large painful stool (Sulphur). Dry (Bry).

Invincible constipation with chronic headache. Constipation with coldness; cannot get warm.

Lac deflor. is supersensitive to cold: to least draught. Complaints from putting hands into cold water.

Worse milk: aversion to milk.

Lycopodium

This homeopathy remedy has impaired digestion; hard stools; passed with difficulty; much loud flatus; pain in abdomen from left to right; tension with itching in anus in the evening; aggravation 4 to 8 pm.;

Abdominal plethora with constipation in old people of the higher classes; who are suffering from retarded defecation.

Lycopodium has ineffectual urging to stool, but under Lycopodium it is not due to irregular intestinal action, but to a constriction of the rectum. Useful homeopathic medicine for constipation and gas formation (flatulence).

Sensation as if something remained behind; constipation due to constriction of the rectum. It is a useful remedy in the constipation of young children; it is apt to be associated with hemorrhoids. There is a constricted feeling about the rectum, as in Silicea.

Magnesia mur

Stools are passed with great difficulty, being composed of hard lumps, which are so dry that they crumble as they pass the anus.

The keynote for Mag.mur. is worse from salt: salt food, salt baths, sea air.

Constipation at the sea side.

Stools dry: crumble at anus.

Natrum Mur

This homeopathic medicine has constipation from inactivity of rectum; obstinate constipation; with much perspiration.

The stools are hard and difficult to expel, causing bleeding and smarting and soreness in the rectum.

There is dryness of the rectum and the stools are crumbly in character; great weakness of the intestine.

History of unresolved grief. Patient is thirsty and craves salt food.

Nux Vomica

Stool hard and difficult; frequent urging to pass stool with no evacuation; sensation as if much feces remained after passing stool; constipation alternate with diarrhea.

Nux vomica produces an increased intestinal action, which is irregular, inharmonious and spasmodic, and this hinders rather than favors an evacuation.

Inactivity, with constant, ineffectual urging to stool;. the passages are incomplete and unsatisfactory, as if part remained behind.

Irregular, peristaltic action; hence frequent ineffectual desire, or passing but small quantities at each attempt.

Absence of all desire for defecation is a contra-indication. Alternate constipation and diarrhoea – after abuse of purgatives.

Itching, blind haemorrhoids, with ineffectual urging to stool; very painful; after drastic drugs.

Frequent small evacuations. Scanty stool, with much urging. Constant uneasiness in rectum.

Irritability with constipation in adults, which results from seasoned food and high living and sedentary life.

Opium

Opium is one of the best homeopathic medicines for constipation; long standing cases of constipation; no desire for stool; inactive rectum; dryness of mucus membrane;

Spasmodic retention of feces; heaviness sensation of abdomen; constipation from fright and fear; from chronic lead poisoning.

To complete inactivity of the bowels, owing to a muscular paresis. Under Opium the faeces become impacted and are passed in little, hard, dry, black balls, and there is absolutely no urging to stool.

Obstinate constipation; no desire to go to stool. Round, hard, black balls. Feces protrude and recede.

Patient wants nothing. Complete loss of consciousness; apoplectic state. Frightful fancies, daring, gay, bright.

Unable to understand or appreciate his sufferings.

Platina

Excellent homeopathy remedy for constipation while travelling.

Torpor of the whole intestinal tract; unsuccessful urging to stool and great dryness of the rectum. The stools adhere to the rectum like putty or glue.

There is great weakness in the abdomen and sensation as if there was a load in the rectum which could not be expelled. It is a remedy for the constipation of travelers and emigrants.

Plumbum met

Plumbum has stools consisting of hard, black balls, but here is some constriction of the rectum, showing that there is some activity of the muscles present.

There is a marked retraction of the abdomen, and a spasm or contraction of the sphincter ani; there is urging to stool, and the stool is passed in little, round balls, which are black and hard they are passed with great difficulty, and are often accompanied by colic or a sensation of a strong pulling the anus up into the rectum.

Constipation; stools hard, lumpy, black with urging and spasm of anus. Obstructed evacuation from impaction of feces.

Neuralgia of rectum. Anus drawn up with constriction. Excessive colic, radiating to all parts of body.

Abdominal wall feels drawn by a string to spine. Pain causes desire to stretch. Intussusception; strangulated hernia. Abdomen retracted.

Obstructed flatus, with intense colic. Colic alternates with delirium and pain in atrophied limbs.

Podophyllum

Homeopathic remedy for constipation of children after a spell of diarrhea.

Sepia

Constipation of females; inability to expel feces or to strain stool; constipation during pregnancy; prolapse rectum; constant fullness, as if weight in rectum; difficult, a little of mucous-covered feces is discharged off and on but gives no satisfaction.

No desire or urging for days and days; the stools are hard and large; inactivity of the rectum, and sensation of a ball in it; patient cannot strain and consequently cannot expel stool.

This homeopathic medicine suits patient is chilly, either very anxious for children and family or totally indifferent to loved ones. Overworked females.

Silicea

Useful homeopathy remedy for constipation in infants and children.

Stool of large, hard lumps, which remain long in rectum; stool hard has to remove mechanically; even a soft stool expelled with much difficulty; constipation of women before and during menses.

Rectum feels paralyzed. Fissures and hemorrhoids, painful, with spasm of sphincter.

Stool comes down with difficulty; when partly expelled, recedes again. Great straining; rectum stings; closes upon stool.

Feces remain a long time in rectum. Constipation always before and during menses; with irritable sphincter ani. Pain or painful cold feeling in abdomen, better external heat.

Hard, bloated. Colic; cutting pain, with constipation; yellow hands and blue nails. Much rumbling in bowels. Inguinal glands swollen and painful.

Sulphur

Ineffectual urging to stool with a sensation of heat, fullness and discomfort in the rectum.

It is a useful remedy with which to commence the treatment of constipation.

Uneasy feeling all through intestinal tract; constipation alternating with diarrhoea; abdominal plethora or passive portal congestion.

Patient becomes constipated after allopathic treatment of skin diseases or other complaints.

Thuja

Symptoms of this homeopathic medicine for constipation include – difficult evacuation after several days; subsequent burning in anus (Bryonia).

Moisture at anus. Anus fissured; painful; surrounded with flat warts.

Violent pains compel cessation of effort (Sul.). Stool recedes (Silicea, Sanicula).

Sensation of something alive in abdomen (Croc.).

Great homeopathy remedy for the much vaccinated, or children who are worse after vaccination.

Prevention of constipation

• Increased fluid intake – drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water per day
• Fiber rich diet – adding fiber rich diet with foods such as brown rice, whole wheat bread, shredded wheat, rolled oats etc.
• Exercise – the patient should incorporate moderate exercise, such as walking, and other exercises to his daily exercise.
• Avoid fat – moderate the consumption of fat-containing foods, such as bacon, butter, cream, and oil. Although these foods will help to soften intestinal contents, they sometimes causes diarrhea.
• Laxatives – take natural laxatives but avoid over use.
• Enema – enema should be taken in case of obstinate constipation but avoid excessive use of enema.
